If you suspect someone is tracking your vehicle, don’t ignore it. GPS trackers are used in auto theft targeting, domestic surveillance situations, and corporate disputes. The good news: there are clear signs and safe next steps.
Common signs your vehicle may be tracked
- Unusual behavior from someone who shouldn’t know your schedule (showing up “randomly” in the same places)
- Strange battery drain (some trackers are hardwired or plug into OBD ports)
- New noises or loose trim after a service or unknown access
- Evidence of tampering near the undercarriage, wheel wells, bumpers, or OBD-II port
Where GPS trackers are commonly hidden
Most trackers are placed for speed and concealment. Common locations include:
- Undercarriage (magnetic trackers attached to metal)
- Inside bumpers or behind plastic trim
- Wheel wells or splash guards
- OBD-II port under the dashboard (plug-in trackers)
- Behind interior panels or glove box areas
Do NOT do this
- Don’t rip parts off or start tearing down panels (you could destroy evidence)
- Don’t “test” suspicious devices by powering them on
- Don’t confront anyone if you suspect a real threat
Safe steps you can take right now
- Visually inspect under the vehicle with a flashlight (don’t crawl under if unsafe).
- Check the OBD-II port for a device plugged in that you didn’t install.
- Document anything suspicious with photos/video and the date/time.
- Call a professional sweep if you want certainty and proper documentation.
When you need a professional vehicle sweep
If you’re a high-risk target (legal dispute, custody/divorce, executive, or high-theft vehicle), a professional sweep is the fastest way to confirm what’s happening. A proper inspection includes magnetometer scanning, RF detection, interior/trim inspection, and evidence handling.
